As of 2/8 I’ll officially… sort of change jobs. I will be “loaned out” as a “project resource” to another team but still reporting to my current boss for now. This other team is one that I have had on my radar, so to speak, and in my career path – so this is all sorts of good in my mind.

This group has all sorts of IT projects coming up that they need to get rolling on for this new year and I’m going to be helping with a lot of those I suspect. To be honest though, I have no idea exactly what I’m going to be doing yet. I haven’t really been given too much detail… or any detail for that matter. But that’s OK.

I’m happy to be moving to something else that will hopefully be more to my liking. Not to mention that I (don’t think) won’t have to be dealing directly with customers from a “customer service” point of view anymore. So that means no more taking cases and fixing problems or deploying new systems or doing upgrades. That sort… YAY!

So I think I move around 2/5 and will start this new position the following Monday. And here’s to hoping it becomes permanent and I can stay there.

Ya, literally, that’s how it will go down. By noon on Tuesday I’ll know one way or the other. Not really anything at all that I can do about it either way, so no reason to freak out about it. Just have to see what happens.

For now.

Here’s the deal: Corning is going to lay off about 3500 by the end of the year. First up are going to be voluntary layoffs for people “qualified” for a package. No idea how many are qualified or how “voluntary” it actually will be. But I believe that part is going to start soon…

Beyond that, nothing else will be announced (as to specific areas affected and actual numbers) until about mid-March – basically after bonus checks go out.

Am I worried? How can I not be? Unemployment isn’t that enticing, considering I probably would not get what I’m making now, and living paycheck to paycheck, it would get REALLY tight around here. On the other hand, I would like to believe that I do my job well enough that if anything were to happen in our department, I hope I would be valuable enough to be able to stay. But I don’t make those decisions.

What would I do if something happened? Not really sure. I do know I would at least try to find another job, if I can get anything that pays more than unemployment might be (let alone anything at all).

No matter what happens though, there isn’t too much I can do about it. Best thing I can do is just keep doing my job and try to show enough reason that if something were to change, I would be worth keeping.

Home:

Jen and I are doing well. She’s working crappy hours still but we’re doing OK with it. We spend pretty much the entire remainder of our free time together. Not to mention that she’s actually started racing with me. So I suppose you could say that we’re starting to share a few more interests… She races with me at autox events and I occasionally read a book.

Work:

I’ve applied for a new job at work. Same department and team, but different position. This one would be technically an “analyst” compared to me just being a “technician” right now. Would hopefully be a pay increase as well – no idea on what level though. Interview is in about two weeks – and my suit even still fits! Other than that we are absolutely swamped and short staffed (thankfully, along with the analyst position that we’re hiring, there is also another technician position). We are just getting crushed though.

Racing:

Waiting for the next event (9/28 @ Arnot Mall). Only this one and one more left for the season. I have a good stranglehold on first place for my class. But there was only one regular competitor through the year and I had him beat by a decent margin most of the time. Hopefully he’ll be back next year though!
